A degradation study in the high desert of Yucca Valley, California. Installed 10.08.2023

This study records the incremental breakdown of materials through a timelapse capturing an image once per hour.

  • In the spirit of material adaptation I am reusing a project called COOL TOOBS developed for a terra cotta facade class, Spring 2023.

  • The standard raw cardboard is folded and hot glued at the end seam and at the vertical internal braces.

  • Installed 10.08.2023 in the somewhat unforgiving environment of the Mojave Desert these 6” diameter by 10” long hexagon cardboard tubes will succumb to the sun, sand, rain, and wind. The test is time.

  • While installing them I observed ants moving in and flies landing on them. The most notable local fauna are scorpions, lizards, rabbits, quail, insects, rattle snakes, coyotes, and birds.

  • They are installed with ground pins and exterior formula liquid nails.

    WEEKS 1 - 5

  • Exactly 48 hours into the timelapse the first signs of decay appeared. A hot glued end seam of one of the western facing hexagons separated.

  • By the end of week 5 and the inner courtyard of the structure is taking on sand and desert weeds, gathering on the ground floor of the vertex.

  • There is a slight discoloration in the cardboard and the adhesive is beginning to release.

WEEKS 6 - 12

  • 6 rain events occurred over 7 weeks. High temp 79 F - Low temp 36 F. Effects of the wet/dry cycle are evident in the the cardboard surface that is showing rippling.

  • The structure had begun to lean towards the west.

  • Exposed metal stakes in the ground have begun to rust.

WEEKS 13 - 22

  • Rain degrades the cardboard the fastest, seams are pulling apart as it leans further towards the ground. The sun has bleached the paper.

  • A road runner has moved into a bush behind the structure and was captured in one of the timelapse shots.

  • Exposed metal stakes continue to rust.
